Schafgrübler (2921 m) is the prominent summit on the ridge between the Oberbergtal and the Lüsenstal, immediately north of the Franz-Senn-Hütte. As a ski tour it is usually approached via the Horntaler Joch (2819 m). The broad slopes of the Horntal, mostly facing east to south-east, give reliable spring firn, while the summit block demands experience on very steep ground. Together with Horntaler Spitze, Schafgrübler is one of the relatively short objectives above the Alpeiner Alm.
Route description
-
Franz-Senn-Hütte → Alpeinalm
Descend directly from the hut to the Alpein Alm.
-
From Alpein into the outer Horntal
From the alpine pasture, climb the south-east-facing slopes until you reach the level of the Stubaier Höhenweg to the Starkenburger Hütte at 2280 m. Now keep right of the rock band dividing the Horntal in two. At 2500 m you reach a level section.
-
to the Großes Horntaler Joch
Ascend to the foot of the Schafgrübler-Ostgrat. A prominent terrace leads into the north-east side of the mountain; the final slope to the Großes Horntaler Joch is extremely steep and should be tackled only in safe conditions.
-
Großes Horntaler Joch → Schafgrübler
From the Joch, first head south over a rocky ridge to the north side of the summit block. From there, continue for a few metres on sparse markings to the summit. The ridge requires sure-footedness and the use of hands in places. In winter, skis are left at the Joch depending on snow conditions.
