The practical handbook by Rudi Mair and Patrick Nairz describes 10 crucial danger patterns – conditions under which avalanche accidents occur quite frequently! Today we are dealing with "cold, loose new snow and wind"! In other words, danger pattern 6
This danger pattern is generally quite easy to recognise, because it directly affects the wind-influenced snow layer close to the surface. A prerequisite, however, is the correct interpretation of wind signs – rime, sastrugi or cornices – which are easy to spot. Recognition can be more difficult if a period of precipitation with wind is followed by precipitation without wind, so that the "warning signs" are snowed over!
Detailed descriptions of the danger patterns can be found in the practical handbook "Lawine"!
